Cigar Insights

From a tobacconist point of view, one of the most common questions we hear is:
“Where do I even start with cigars?”

The good news is—starting doesn’t have to be complicated.
The biggest mistake beginners make is chasing strength instead of flavor. A dark wrapper or large cigar doesn’t automatically mean a better experience. In fact, for new smokers, smooth and balanced cigars are almost always the best place to begin.

Body vs. Strength: What Really Matters
When we talk about a cigar’s body, we’re not talking about nicotine or spice. Body is the weight and texture of the smoke—how it feels in your mouth. Think of it like drinks: tea is light, coffee is fuller, espresso is intense.
• Mild-bodied cigars are soft, airy, and incredibly forgiving—perfect for beginners.
• Medium-bodied cigars add more texture and presence without overwhelming the palate. This is where many smokers settle comfortably.
• Full-bodied cigars are dense, heavy, and intense—best saved for later, once your palate has developed.
• If you’re new, start mild or medium and let your taste evolve naturally.
Choosing the Right Size
Size affects burn time and how the cigar develops. You don’t need to memorize every vitola—just pick something manageable.

For beginners, I usually recommend:
• Robustos for a balanced, approachable smoke
• Toros if you want something slower and cooler
• Shorter formats when time is limited
• Avoid very long or thin cigars early on—they’re less forgiving
Cut, Light, and Smoke Slowly
A clean cut and gentle light make a world of difference. Use a proper cutter, trim just the cap, and toast the foot slowly before lighting. When smoking, take your time—one puff every 30–60 seconds is ideal. Cigar smoke is meant to be tasted, not inhaled.

Let the cigar rest, watch the burn, and don’t overthink it. A relaxed pace keeps flavors smooth and the body balanced.
Enjoy the Journey
There’s no “right” cigar—only what you enjoy. Some smokers stay with mild and medium blends forever, others grow into fuller-bodied cigars. Your preferences will develop naturally with experience.

Cigars are about patience, curiosity, and enjoyment. Take it slow, ask questions, and most importantly—enjoy the journey through the leaf.
